Superfoods: What, Why, & Where To Find Them
13 February 2023

You are what you eat, and eating healthy has become more important than ever.

Health Hub’s Dietary Guidelines for Singaporeans cites unhealthy eating patterns as a major contributing factor to the rise in chronic diseases like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes – all of which are the current leading causes of death in Singapore.

Enter ‘superfoods’, a term you might have seen before in a menu or perhaps some online dietary content; but what exactly are ‘superfoods’?

“Superfoods” refers to foods that are packed with multiple nutrients known to reduce the likelihood of developing the aforementioned chronic diseases. While they are not a food group on their own, foods under this umbrella term are usually high in antioxidants, healthy fats, fibre, and micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals.

Some of the superfoods, along with their examples and nutritional benefits, include:

  • Fruits such as pomegranate, blueberries, and raspberries – high in antioxidants, vitamins B and C, as well as iron and fibre.
  • Dark, leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, cabbage, and broccoli – high in calcium, iron, fibre, and vitamins A, C, and K.
  • Nuts and seeds – high in dietary fibre, phytochemicals which function as antioxidants, and vitamins B3, B6, B9, and E.
  • Beans and legumes – high in fibre, B-group vitamins, and minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, and zinc.
  • Fish – high in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins B2 and D, and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, iodine, magnesium, and potassium.

Despite its exclusive-sounding term, we can find superfoods in many of the dining options available around and cooked in ways that are delicious too. Let these places challenge your notion that healthy eating is bland and unsatisfying.

Superfood galore by the Mediterranean shore – Pita Tree

Growing in popularity for its flavourful dishes and numerous health benefits, the Mediterranean cuisine revolves around whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices for flavour.

Pita Tree offers a variety of Mediterranean classics, even for vegetarians – Kebabs, Falafels, Mezzes, Pita pockets, variations of Mediterranean salads, you name it. How are they healthy? Falafels and Hummus dips mainly comprise chickpeas, which is a member of the legume family. In addition to grilling their meat, which is a healthier method of cooking, Pita Tree also only uses superior-quality lean meat, as well as fresh herbs and spices to minimise fat content while giving it a fragrant flavour.
