To say that 2020 has been something of a strange year would be a vast understatement. But as we navigate our new reality – with caution, of course – it is important to also appreciate the seemingly small things that help return some semblance of normalcy to our daily lives and routines.
A drink offer will not solve all your problems, but it might just help you appreciate all the times you spent with friends or colleagues at after-work tipples. Dine-in promotions might inspire organisation of gatherings with four of your closest pals. Special food items showcasing local flavours feels even more poignant as we enter the month of August.
While the nation’s revamped birthday celebrations this year might be a reminder that we are still not quite out of troubled waters, the efforts of these local businesses to support the new normal and drum up some much-needed cheer, give a glimpse of better days over the horizon. And that’s certainly something we can all raise our glasses to this National Day.
What could be more quintessentially Singaporean than dedicating the National Day long weekend (or any other weekend, really) to the nourishment of the stomach? For those who need a breather from their work-from-home arrangements, these dine-in promotions will prove to be quite the deal-sweetener.
At the buzzy restaurant-bar The Spot (#01-26/27) for starters, a special set menu puts a local spin on modern European dishes for creations like Angus Beef Shortrib “Satay” and Baked “Otah” Seabass in Banana Leaf – just the thing for when you are in the mood for something fun and creative. Not to be outdone by the local competition, New Zealand-Japanese steakhouse Wakanui Grill Dining Singapore (#04-02), will also present the Shiratama, which adds coconut milk, lychee and raspberry to a traditionally Japanese dessert as a special National Day homage to its host country. Alternatively, you can finish your meal on a sweet note and do good at the same time by ordering the Lychee Sorbet Topped with Fresh Raspberries Puree (available only from 8 – 10 August 2020 at $5.50 per portion for the first 300) after your meal at Majestic Restaurant (#04-01).
‘Tis the season to also appreciate our loved ones even more, and nothing expresses love quite like dining together and sharing food. Between 8 – 10 August 2020 at NUDE Grill/Chill (#01-22/23), kids below the ages of 12 dine for free, while taking your parents to dinner means free dessert for everyone. There is also much to share at casual cafe Milligram (#01-11), which offers complimentary sides of chicken karaage (6pcs), truffle fries, sweet potato fries, or calamari rings with spicy tartar with every two orders of mains*.
Otherwise, grab a friend and split a Buddy Meal at the fuss-free Little Bowl (#B2-34) – from 1 – 8 August 2020, the Spicy Prawn Aglio Olio and Salmon Mentaiko Don go for just $18.90 altogether.
The perfect way to round off an evening with all that good nosh? Drinks, of course, and they do not get any more value-for-money than at Anglo Indian Cafe & Bar (#01-10), where shots of Baileys, Jagermeister, Sambuca and Tequila go for just $5++ each for the month of August.
There is plenty else to enjoy too if you would rather play it safe and bring the party back to your place. Takeaway any four dons from popular wagyu beef bowl place Waa Cow! (#01-09) and get 50% off its signature house-made Chrysanthemum Gin as a refreshing accompaniment to the hearty beef bowls from 8-10 Aug 2020. Each bottle is good for one to two portions.
For teetotalers, pick up the limited edition National Day Tea Latte from Addictude (#B2-27) instead – the delicious berries latte is made with organic mango cranberry tea, fresh raspberries and super berries and is aptly dressed up in the colours of the national flag.
More local flavours abound on the menus at PizzaExpress (#01-20/21) and Joe & Dough (#B2-12). Order to-go the half Laksa, half Chilli Crab Romana pizza from PizzaExpress, which pairs the piquant flavours of laksa with the quintessential chilli crab to delicious effect; the pizza is available only from 3 – 9 August 2020. Round off that home party spread with Joe & Dough’s signature Gula Melaka Pandan whole cake or sliced cake, which are going at promotional prices of $42 and $5.50 respectively from 27 July – 31 August 2020.
Finally, a true Singaporean would know to take advantage of shopping promotions when presented with good options – enjoy the up to 30% storewide sale (1 August – 1 September 2020) at Honey House (#B2-22) and the free limited edition SG50 sunglasses by Zanotti (27 July – 31 August 2020) with any purchase above $500 at Vision Lab (#B2-56/57).
Fans of BRU – Bubble Tea & Juice Infusions’ (#B2-21) tea infusions, juice concoctions and bubble teas will also not want to miss the opportunity to get more bang for the buck – enjoy bonus credits of $5 and $15 with $50 & $100 top-up respectively to the loyalty card in the month of August – while flower fiends should hop on the NDP special at Enjoy Fleur (#B2-70A), which entitles every fresh flower purchase of $55 and above to $5 off and an additional $5 voucher (3 – 17 August 2020).
There is icing on the top – with minimum $30 spend at Marina One from 3 to 31 August 2020, receive a $5 voucher! Promotion is for Monday to Friday, 11am to 5pm at #B2-59.
